The Burlington Southern was formed when the BN was. Recognizing the need for a railroad to serve local industries from Portland, Oregon, to Dunsmuir, California, the BN and SP formed a holding company to join the two cities in 1971. The Wishram bridge over the Columbia River is also modeled.
